Scripture: Luke 12:49-51 (NLT) 49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.

Observation:  At first when I read this scripture my mind went back to Jesus birth and how the angels proclaimed in in Luke 2:14-“Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” I began to wonder how is it that the angels are proclaiming "peace on earth' and then 10 chapters later in Luke Christ is saying " I have come to bring fire on the earth", what a stark contrast.  In reading some of the commentaries Luke 2 is talking about peace to those that have repented of their sins, and now have the chance to be reconciled to God.  The "fire on earth" or the "division" being talked about in Luke 12 is about "choosing", choosing to stand in truth or not. Standing to choose Christ or not.  This is the fire and division that will be happening in families as the scripture later relate. Verse 52 of Luke 12 "  52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three."

Application: In my experience being Christian 20+ years, I have realized that it takes a "daily" choosing to serve Christ and standing in his truth.  The temptation to sin and the distraction of this world is so great that it can in a "minute" of time throw your life off of the righteous path in Christ...."just like that".  This is why it is important to daily dive into God's word for encouragement, guidance, strength and wisdom.  This is why communing with God is important in prayer.  The bible tells us to stop ceasing in prayer...but to do it constantly throughout the day. ( 1st Thessalonians 5:16-18 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.)

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, there is much division in this country and I pray that your truth will prevail through all the muck that is present.  Lord, show us as a country your ways, help to keep us in tune in what you are doing. Your justice to prevail Lord, Your truth to prevail and all that is right in your eyes to prevail.  Forgive us Lord...forgive us Lord...forgive us Lord.  We stand as believers in Christ on behalf of our country.  Help us to stand still in Your truth...in Jesus Name...Amen.
